The Sorceress
A magician, mage, sorcerer, sorceress, wizard, witch, or a person known under one of many other possible terms in fiction is someone who uses or practices magic that derives from supernatural or occult sources.
I gave her costume & accessories much thought & consideration… After some speed-research on the subject of magic, here they are enumerated below:
Charm Bands
“Magic Circles” or amulets, precious & semi-precious stones threaded into bands. The circle is a significant symbol to practitioners of magic – magical items gathered into circles are said to draw more energy than when they are not. |
Compact Cape
Water-resistant cape tailored from wax-coated woven cloth; May be attached or detached from trousers. When attached, it is used to carry supplies. When detached, it is used as a cape or camp-blanket. |
Silk Trousers
Allows comfortable & free movement to sorcerers on the go. Its length may be adjusted by rolling & buttoning its ends.
The absorbency of silk makes it comfortable to wear in warm weather while its low conductivity keeps warm air close to the skin during cold weather. |
Circe’s Girdle
Said to have been made & worn by Circe, the goddess of magic, herself! It magnifies the strength of spells by a hundred. |
Leather Boots
Durable, flexible & therefore practical leather footwear can see a traveling sorcerer through any terrain. Its quality & craftsmanship lasts a lifetime. |
The Key of Solomon
A “Magic Wand” made of lightweight alchemist’s gold. Its safety cuff binds the wand to its wielder.
Gone are the days when traveling sorcerers are weighed down by spell-books! Books 1 & 2 of the original Key of Solomon (grimoire or book of magic attributed to King Solomon) are stored into this wand. A limited number of spells from other spell-books may also be stored.
Book 1 of The Key of Solomon contains conjurations, invocations & curses to summon & constrain spirits & demons. Book 2 contains detailed instructions in acquiring or constructing magical clothing & implements as well as performing purification & sacrificial rituals. |

The Making of The Sorceress
How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See The Sorceress in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1
I started out with a relaxed, artistic pose. There is much white space on both sides of the figure - they're allowances for her accessories! |
Phase 2
I added wild hair, a ball of fire & a magic wand.
I drew in a complicated geometric shape for the head of the wand. I just drew in line after line with a ruler until an acceptable symbol formed. |
Phase 3
Finalized the design for the wand. |
Phase 4
Added wrap-around cape, trousers & accessories - girdle, earrings, bands & a cuff to secure the wand. |
Phase 5
Added buckled boots (decided against buttoned boots because they would look too uniform next to the buttoned trouser ends), a cropped blouse & necklaces. |
Phase 6
Outlined in ink! |
Phase 7
Shaded-in the wrap-around cape & trousers. I used a fine point to make the material appear smooth & light like silk.
Shaded-in the boots. I used solid blacks & whites to express shiny patent leather. |
Phase 8
Shaded-in the hair, mostly blacks with white highlights - gives the illusion of a thick black wavy mane.
Shaded-in the tail of the ball of fire using pointillist technique. |
Phase 9
Shaded-in the skin. |
Phase 10
Shaded-in the wand & all her ornaments. I also added "electric" waves along her arms, the head of the wand & the ball of fire. |
Phase 11
Background time!!! Added worn-out pages of a book on the bottom & smoke lines rising from it.
The spaces between the smoke lines are dotted with white ink to give the illusion of "cosmic" space! |
Phase 12
Shaded-in the pages of the book. |
Phase 13
Added Runic-looking letters & a Celtic symbol on the page of the book - now it looks like a page off an old spellbook!
Finished! |
