The Messiah

By far, this is the most difficult project I ever covered! It's probably because I'm such a Jesus fan that I got overly conscious & tried too hard to make everything perfect... OR it must have been demons playing with my mind. I'm glad I managed to finish it despite the "obstacles"!

This one's for the one man who changed the world!

The Making of The Messiah

How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See The Messiah in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1

To me, Jesus was a strong man who had amazing leadership qualities & charisma. I want to show this side of him in this illustration. The best way to do it is with a muscular torso & arms, plus an angular face.

Phase 2

My original plan was a beardless Jesus but since most pictures of him showed otherwise, it would be totally uncovincing. So, I added the beard anyway.

I also added his trademark wavy hair & the outline for his bonds.

Phase 3

Added Jesus' bonds! I decided that a combination of hemp ropes & steel chains would work best make the drawing interesting.

I imagine I'd be adding some Roman columns as background, but that'll come later.

Phase 4

I changed the angle of the head. The previous angle looked awkward.

Of course, when you change something, pencil it in first before you actually ink it!

Since I'm happy with the rest of the drawing, I went ahead & outlined them with ink.

Phase 5

Outlined the head in ink.

Shaded-in the skin: chest, shoulders & arms.

Since this is a large head/torso drawing, I can't shade-in all the skin sections in one sitting. So, I'm putting off the midsection for next time.

Shaded-in the midsection.

Phase 7

Shaded-in the hair & the beard.

Phase 8

Shaded-in the face - it looks a little severe. I'll see what we can do to soften it up a bid next.

Phase 9

Shaded-in the ropes & some links on his chains.

Now that rendering the background is getting nearer by each phase, I am having second thoughts about having Roman columns. I wonder if it would be better for the background to feaure the Garden of Gethsemany?

the messiah

Phase 10

Added outlines for the elements that make up the background.

I decided on crosses for the top portion & thorns for the bottom.

The previous ideas, Roman columns or the Garden of Gethsemany, just don't connect with Jesus' heavy chains & bonds. But, with the crosses & thorns, there's unity there. They were all present during the Passion of Christ.
