Phase 1
Mary wears few pieces of wooden jewelry, which I imagined Joseph had made for her.
Clothing should be simple but classy so, I made use of folds instead of prints in the fabric. |
Phase 2
I've decided on a triangular layout for sophistication & impact.
I decorated Mary's skirts with roses to form the base of the triangle.
I added light trinity halos - perhaps delicate vines would do to outline the halos? Heavier elements would break the triangular layout. |
Phase 3
I drew in some branches to form Mary's the Trinity halos.
I added a few more branches among the roses to create some uniformity but I am not sure if it was a good idea. The effect makes the base look "busy". My fear is that this will divert the attention from the subject. I might just cancel these branches when I ink. |
Phase 4
Outlined the sketch in ink.
I left out the branches among the roses & it looks like I'm on the right track! The whole picture looks better now.
It's now prepped to be rendered! |
Phase 5
As I prepared to begin inking, I noticed that there were several elements on the drawing that did not look quite right.
I changed up the folds in Mary's hood, sleeves & skirts. I also altered some folds in Jesus' drapes - notice that Mary's right hand is now partly covered by folds.
Barely noticeable changes: I did away with Mary's necklaces, changed her earrings from studs to loops. The buttons on her cape are now round in place of the previous cylindrical ones. |
Phase 6
Inked in most of the fabric. Next, I'll work on the branches, then the roses & the background would come last. I'm thinking of trying out a "galaxy" background = all black with random white sparks/stars. |
Phase 7
Shaded Mary's & Jesus' faces. Mary's facial expression has altered a bit. I'm not quite happy about it. |
Phase 8
Shaded roses at the base & the branches around the head. I don't have any ideas on how I ought to render the leaves yet so I'll head on to the "galaxy" background next. |
Phase 9
Made minor corrections on Mary's face. White ink can do miracles in such cases. I brightened the eyes, widened the nose bridge, outlined the mouth & rounded the chin with white ink!
The background is now ready for the "galaxy" effect I've been planning since the early phases. This will be attained by covering the key areas with masking film (leaving just the black background exposed), then spattering white ink on the paper. |
Phase 10
Spattered white ink across the black background. Thy create the illusion of stars & sparkles on a distant night sky. Hence, the term, "galaxy" background. |
