Horsemen of the Apocalypse

The "4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse" is a term used to describe a concept from the New Testament of the Christian Bible, in chapter 6 of the Book of Revelation. Although scholars disagree as to what exactly each horseman represents, the 4 horsemen are often referred to as Conquest, War, Famine & Death.

This was supposed to be my entry for the Darksiders: End of Days contest but I did not make the deadline. Still, I worked on this illustration until its completion!

I imagined the Horsemen of the Apocalypse as Centaurs. Centaurs are horse + men, after all.

The Making of Horsemen of the Apocalypse

How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1

This was supposed to be my entry for the Darksiders: End of Days contest but I did not make the deadline. Still, I'm working on this illustration until it's complete!

I imagined the horsemen of the Apocalypse as Centaurs. Centaurs are horse-men, get it?

I did not get the chance to scan the rough sketch because I was in such a rush!

As you can see, the figures are already drawn with defined lines.

Phase 2

I was not happy with the previous arrangement of the figures, so I rearranged & traced them onto 2 sheets of paper.

Now, this piece shall be a twin-panel. I decided to separate the figures, else, the right-most centaur would look oversized compared to the left-most centaur.

Phase 3

Outlined the centaurs in ink, adding their weapons, in the process.

Cumulus clouds in the back have also been added. I plan to create the same cloud-effect I used in Mary & Angel Gabriel.

Phase 4

I'll work on the panels by section. This method is time-efficient when working on like figures.

Shaded-in the all centaurs' upper extremities.
