Fairy Queen

This started off as a quick, easy pencil drawing but it was a challenge to render in ink! I had to start over thrice until I finally got the face right!

I took parts from animals & plants to create the Fairy Queen cto express that her very being is one with nature. She has petals for hair, wings of a bird on the base of her neck & butterfly antennae on her forehead!

The Making of Fairy Queen

How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See Fairy Queen in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1

I'm satisfied with the shape & size of the face & the field of flowers. The wing (positioned at the back of her neck) looks too spare. I ought to bulk it up a bit.

Phase 2

I added volume to the wing by fattening up the feathers! It would have been great if I could lengthen them up as well but there isn't much space left.

Phase 3

I've inked in the outline. I only used a few thickness variations for these lines.

Phase 4

I believe it is smart to work with the eyes first because they define the character most. From there, one can begin working on everything else because the mood has already been set. I've also initially rendered the flowers!

The lines on the face don't sit well with me. There's something about the line directions that I can't quite put my finger on.

Phase 5

I concentrated most of the shading on the face then proceeded with the flowers. I decided on darkening the shadows over & around the cheekbones rather than over the mouth.

I like how her antennae turned out! The flowers look nice, too.

Now I'm wondering if the background ought to be light or dark. I have not decided on the texture for the feathers yet, either. I'll leaf through some books for inspriation.

Phase 6

Dark feathers make the face look brighter, don't you think? Contrast is key. Now, what to do with the background?

Phase 7

I gave the Fairy Queen a beaded high-collar so her head doesn't appear as if it's floating (that'd be creepy).

I added vines behind the flower stems to even out the weight of the wing. Now it appears as if the flowers & the vines form some type of base for the entire drawing!
