Dragon

A dragon is usually represented as breathing fire & having a reptilian body & sometimes wings that feature in the myths of many cultures.

I wanted to create a dragon that distinguishes itself from the snake-like beast in myths. I gave my dragon heavy fore & hind legs to achieve this.

Phase 1

A unicorn would never do without a dragon to go with it.

I want to make a dragon that distinguishes itself from the snake-like beast in myths. The most effective way to do this is to give our creature heavy fore &hind legs.

Phase 2

The dragon's most fearsome attribute is it's head. So, I've given him the works - multiple horns, huge nostrils, predator eyes & frills".

Phase 3

Outlined in ink.

Phase 4

Shaded-in the fur on his shoulders & forehead.

Shaded-in the hair on the tip of his tail & forehead.

Blocked-in horns on his forehead & frills.

Phase 5

Added texture to the frills on his head & back using pointillist technique.

dragon

Phase 6

Rendered the neck, tail & shoulders using strict cross-hatching. This gives the illusion of the skin having a dry, rough & reptilian texture.

dragon

Phase 7

Rendered the hind & forelegs.

Notice that the hatching on the forearms differs from the rest of the body. The texture is effective in expressing the lose, iguana-like folds on the skin of the forelegs.

Phase 8

Added glowing bubbles in the upper left corner to balance the weight of the dragon which occupies most of the space; also to hint at magic.

Finished.
