The Count &His Muse

The Count is once again the subject of this dark drawing. But he is seen here with his muse. Don't they look quite a ravishing pair?

The Making of The Count & His Muse

How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See The Count & His Muse in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1

I've developed the Muse's figure well enough but I am at a loss with that of the Count. I've added a touch of shojo-manga-esque roses on the bottom to make the scene dark but romantic. There'll be some candles, cobwebs in the background & maybe even chandeliers, too (if there's any space left)!

Phase 2

I decided to stick to the original costume design for The Count as found here! I changed up the faces - eyes/brows especially to make them look more vampire-like.

I'll leave the drawing this way for now as I'm off to research on baroque candlestick designs for the background.

Phase 3

I'm presenting the Final sketch before inking! I Simplified The Muse's outfit because it draws too much attention. Added the background of candles & cobwebs. There's no more room for the chandeliers, so I opted for cobwebs instead.

Phase 4

I've outlined the drawing in ink! It's now ready to be filled in with texture & detail!

Phase 5

I'm done rendering The Count. The lizard-skin robe was time-consuming! I made his eyes more dramatic by adding shadow around the corners. Then, aged his face by adding subtle lines around the mouth. I believe the abs need more shadow.

I cut my drawing thumb last night & could not do any more work.

Phase 6

I'm done rendering The Muse. I opted for a fur collar instead of leather to even out the weight of her hair , so it won't appear too "big". Both figures are dark toned, as the background will be black.

Phase 7

How do you like the black roses?

Phase 8

I Shaded-in the black background & feathered areas around the candle lights to white.
