The Count

The mysterious Count is a cross between The Count Dracula & The Count of Monte Cristo, who have several things in common. Both characters were shrouded in mystery & fueled by vengeance.

The Making of The Count

How'd I do it? Watch how I work! Here are scanned images of the illustration in development! See The Count in the works, from preliminary pencil sketch to the final pen & ink drawing! These phase-by-phase drawings may also give you some ideas for your own drawings!

Phase 1

I'm happy with the character itself but there's a lot of white space around him. How about a pattern for his cape & brickwork in the background?

Phase 2

Added folds for the cape & then some raven feathers on his back, to even out the weight. There's also a doorway now to frame the figure. I still haven't decided what pattern or texture to put on the cape.

Phase 3

Ah well, I proceeded with the inking of the outlines as I know I'll only get stuck thinking about the patterns. I'm happy with the clean & crisp lines. It's already starting to look good! I didn't ink in the doorway yet because I'm having second thoughts about it.

Phase 4

Finally - lizard skin for the cape!

Phase 5

Went with the original plan of brickwork in the background; plus, the doorway was a good idea after all!
